Specific Applications Of Polyimide Tape

By Cathy Mercer

This is usually a very thin film that mostly is used as a cover. It is also well known for its property of withstanding extremely high temperatures. This is also the reason why it is used to cover burning houses. It is also very light something which has led to it being preferred in the aviation industry. Clearly the aviation industry goes for the lightest materials even to make the place crafts themselves, therefore polyimide tape fits in too.

There are different molecules that are involved in their manufacture. Some very complex procedures as step polymerisation are the ones that are used to synthesise the polyimide tape. Dianhydride is the main compound that is also used in this process of synthesis in the procedure named above. This whole process takes place in very high temperatures of up to 573K.

This adhesive comes with different uses in different fields. A field that is very familiar with these tapes is the aviation field. Aircrafts use it because it has very good insulation properties. The civil aircrafts as well as the military ones both depend on it for their wiring. The main reason given for this is its weight which is relatively lower than that of other insulators. It has high insulation power and is able to condone very high ranges of temperature.

Space crafts also use them because of some of their properties. The garments that the astronauts put on also have a layer of this tape on them. This field mainly uses its power of thermal insulation to perform the same function. They also act as plastic support in Solar Sails. In space they can be termed as a long term source of help.

They also come in handy in the medical field. All sources of x-rays need them as their covers. It has a relatively high transmittance to the x-ray waves generally. This explains why they are the ones use and not just any other insulator. Thermal and mechanical stability are also the other properties of polyimide that makes them fit for use in x-ray dealings.

Finally, they are used for 3D printing. This is because of its adherence to ABS plastic. Its main role is to cover the surfaces of the platform that is heated. The other role that it plays is that of a print bed material. This whole process is usually carried out in a RepRap 3D printer.

This tape however has some disadvantages. One of them is that their wiring causes very many short circuits. This is mainly experienced in the aircrafts and space crafts that use its wiring. The short circuits cause some sparks. This causes so many repairs to be done on them. Sometimes it goes to a point where they are forced to just do a whole re-wiring procedure.

In conclusion, these polyimide tape is usually available in three dimensions in terms of thickness. There are 1,2, and 5Mil thick tapes that are available in the market. One gets to choose from this list, the one that is most suitable for whatever function they want it to perform. They are usually also packaged in rolls.
