Main Facts Relating To A Personal Life Coach

By Cathy Mercer

There are numerous reasons as to why one would need a personal life coach. Before we look at all these reasons, we need to understand what the main role of such an individual is. While minor differences exist depending on factors related to both the client and the coach or instructor, the basics are the same. Life instructors focus on imparting their clients with knowledge and skills that will help them deal with various challenges that they are faced with on a day-to-day basis.

The instructor is needed at almost any point in life. A young person, for example, will need to be advised on how to choose a career, a spouse or an investment opportunity. If already employed, they will get tips on how to make the best of their current opportunities and how they can achieve the career goals that they have set. The elderly need some advice on how to confront the challenges of old age and how to enjoy their twilight years.

There are several methods that can be used by the trainer. The main ones in current usage are the use of telephones and face-to-face interviews. The effectiveness of these two methods has been found to be the same according to research. The telephone method is, however, widely preferred mainly due to the convenience associated with it. The client and the instructor can communicate at any time form virtually any geographical location.

A life coach provides a favourable environment for their client to come up with solutions to their problems. It is believed that all solutions can be generated from deep within the individual. This contrasts sharply with what happens in related fields where the solutions are given by an instructor. The idea is to ensure that a person is developed wholly and does not just get a short term solution imposed on them.

An effective coach is one who does not make assumptions about the needs of their clients. They do not judge and dictate instructions to the clients. They simply provide an environment that allows their clients to reflect on various issues and make informed decisions. This is the only way to ensure that the solutions will be long lasting. For this reason, the instructors have emerged to be more of facilitators than teachers.

Another important quality that should be possessed by the instructor is empathy. This is the ability to see things from the point of view of the client and to experience the same emotions that they have been experiencing. This makes it easier to understand them and thus the coach is in a position to guide the discussion more effectively.

Apart from being a source of inspiration for many people, this field is also a career choice. The popularity of the profession has been increasing steadily over the last few years. This increase is thought to be due to a number of reasons. One of them is the fact that people want to take up careers in this field because they have been inspired by a life coach in the past and they want to inspire another person in return. The other major reason is that very little training is required if any.

There are a number of similarities and differences between a personal life coach and a psychologist. Whereas psychologists claim to have answers to problems, the coach does not. They instead help the clients to come up with their own answers. The main similarity between the two is that both rely on good listening skills on the part of the psychologist or instructor. In addition, both require building of genuine relationships.
