Learn How Omega 3 Fatty Acids Can Make You Healthy

By Vito La Fata

You've probably heard of omega 3 fatty acids, and you probably know that they are good for you. But you may not know exactly what they are and why they are so important. Omega 3 fatty acids are a good kind of fat that is essential for the proper functioning of your body.

These fats come in two main types: Short-chain fatty acid called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) and Long-chain fatty acids called EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). There are many benefits of omega 3 supplements. For example, scientists are learning that many common, chronic diseases have a shared starting point in the human body: inflammation.

Cancer, asthma and depression are just a few of the chronic diseases that not only afflict many people, but also have a starting in the body as inflammation. The good news is that omega 3 reduces inflammation, and therefore can be a protection against these diseases. Your brain benefits from omega 3's as well.

People who have high levels of the omega 3 DHA in their bodies actually cut their chances of getting Alzheimer's disease and dementia in half! But the benefits of omega 3's in your brain are not limited to just cognitive ability. People who suffer with depression don't just feel sad and despairing; they literally have smaller brains.

By now you are probably eager to increase the levels of omega 3 fatty acids in your body, but you not know how to go about doing that. It is crucial to understand that your body cannot manufacture omega 3's. To have them in your body, you have to eat them. You can do this through certain foods or by taking supplement capsules.

Common foods that omega 3's are found in include fish like canned tuna, salmon and shrimp. Walnuts and flaxseed also contain them. You may find, however, that you prefer to take your omega 3's in a supplemental capsule. Either method is fine, just as long as you are getting enough daily.
