Acai berries have been in the news a lot. Some people swear by them as a health aid, some think they are a miracle cure for weight loss. Whatever the claims, one thing is certain, they are a purple berry that is indigenous to the Amazon rain forest. For many years the natives have used the acai berry for food.



The variety of different uses for the fruit, such as in juice and frozen form, may come as a complete to surprise to those who are used to seeing them in the form of a pill. However, the pill form is still very popular. This is because when the fruit is harvested it cannot keep for too long before it has to be juiced or freeze dried.



If you can get hold of the fruit itself, either fresh or frozen, then it can be liquidized and added to salads as a fresh dressing. They're also versatile enough to be added to sweet desserts like cheesecake and ice cream as a sauce. The flavor is apparently chocolaty with a hint of berry.

If you cannot get hold of the berries then just add half juice and half milk and blend together. Its use in hot food should not be overlooked. Cranberries are used in turkey, but acai berries are an interesting substitute.



Adults can use the fruit in their drinks. Cocktails that call for fruit can easily have these added instead of, say, blackberries or raspberries. You'll probably want to adjust the measures until you get the hang of it. For a healthier drink, adding the juice to a little water creates a refreshing beverage.



Those who like a cup of coffee in the morning can enhance the flavor by adding a little juice. The amount of juice added to the cup can be adjusted according to taste, with sugar added if it isn't sweet enough. The added nutrients in the berries, and the caffeine on the coffee, may well be the pick me up that's needed for a day at work.



What you may not have known is that the acai berry is packed full of nutrition, just a lot of other fruits. It has lots of B-vitamins, as well as beta-carotene and copper. This alone might make it a great accompaniment to your usual breakfast. Try putting the fruit in cereal or drinking the juice with your usual breakfast.



Acai berries have many uses and come in a variety of different guises, such as tablets and juice. Some say they help with different types of ailments but nothing is absolutely concrete yet. What is certain is that the fruit itself is packed with antioxidants and nutrients that can help supplement a diet that is short on nutrition. The best way of finding out if the berry can help is by trying it.
