Tim Thayne, who has a doctorate in psychology and is a licensed marriage family therapist, spoke about his organization, Homeward Bound, with Lon Woodbury on L.A. Talk Radio. They discussed the idea about home as a safe haven in troubled times when family members experienced a crisis.
Background On Tim Thayne and Homeward Bound
Tim Thayne, PH.D., LMFT, is the founder and CEO of Homeward Bound.
After receiving his doctorate from Virginia Tech, he focused on specializing in Marriage and Family treatment to help dysfunctional family and organizational systems get back into harmony. His methods have helped both families and companies settle longstanding issues that created conflict. Before launching this psychological intervention work, he started and operated Therapeutic Expeditions, an extremely effective Wilderness therapy education school.
Homeward Bound was created to fill the gap between out-of-home treatment programs and the realities of home life or independent living. Participating families have benefited from the practical and customized education, coaching, and real-time support they receive at the hands of Homeward Bound's experienced Transition Coaches.
Homeward Bound: Valuing the Significance of Home
During the interview, Dr Thayne shared how his own childhood experience growing up in a close home taught him the value of family life. As a therapist who focused on healing the relationships in a home, he was able to help parents and children alike experienced profound personal growth.
As an analogy, he discussed how pets like dogs and cats found security in having a peaceful area to go where they might feel at home. People, too, shared this natural desire to have a safe haven when life became overwhelmingly challenging.
Dr. Thayne believes that when family member's bonds are tight, tragedy and crisis brings everybody together to conquer it, however when the family bonds are fragile, any situation or misfortune pulls them apart, forcing each to look somewhere else for a home. It was very difficult for parents to send their children out of the home--perhaps, to a therapeutic boarding institution--so that the child could respect the value of a family.
In closing, Dr Thayer believed that what parents needed to do to create a home was to honor the healing power of love, deliberation in creating a Home, and establishing family values.
Recap
Home is where we establish our essential relationships in life. It is a sacred place where families can share values, customs, memories, and experiences. For parents to produce a loving home, they need to be open to unplanned sharing experiences. In addition, they needed to proactively begin creating family traditions. The homeward bound experience was all about making home a wonderful place for all its members.
