Can I Interpret My Dream Meanings?

By Andrea Davidson

Dreams are very strange and often confusing. Sometimes they can be extreme and turn into nightmares. Many people think they are indecipherable and want to understand them better. This often leads to the question; "is it possible to interpret my dream meanings?"

There are many reasons why we have dreams. Freud created one of the most popular theories when he said that we do it in order to experience our unconscious wishes. However, many people believe this point of view is limited. Some cognitive scientists say that dreaming is linked to evolution. They say that we do it in order to practice escaping from threatening situations. As a result, we will be better at dealing with them in the real world.

Some think that dreaming makes us think better. If we were able to remember everything we saw during our waking hours then our brains would be overloaded, so dreams work out what information is worth keeping and what should be thrown away. Our thinking improves because our minds are not being clogged up with useless data.

Others believe that dreaming is similar to cleaning your hard drive. The brain links information in a particular way but it can potentially do this more efficiently. While we sleep, our brain works in a more random way, creating new information pathways. This aids the brain to get rid of unproductive links which enables it to work better.

Some doctors say that dreams enable us to confront emotions which our rational, waking mind would find too troubling. When we sleep then, we are able to confront these problems by converting them into images. It is similar to therapy. The other modern theory is that dreams have no special meaning at all. They are simply the result of the brain working in a random way because there is no consciousness to control it or give it direction.

When trying to work out the meaning of our dreams, we need to remember them as fully as possible. If they seem vague to us, then it is extremely difficult to comprehend them. Keep a paper and pen by your bed because then you can write down the content of your dream when you wake-up. Try to make a note of as much information as possible, regardless of how silly it might seem.

Avoid trying to give your dreams a plot. This might seem like the logical thing to do but it blurs them, making them harder to understand. When analysing them, you need to be aware that they relate to your particular life and circumstances. There are no stock answers so dream dictionaries cannot help you. It's up to you to decipher the dream's true meaning.

Try not to over analyse your dreams at first. Look for the most obvious connections to your real life. Anything that resembles it should be dealt with first, as should anything in your dreams which you think you've actually done.

How Can I Interpret My Dream Meanings? As you can see, it is not difficult. However, not only must you do the work, you must also be honest with yourself.
