American Indian Artifacts Tell A Historic Story

By Cathy Mercer

American Indian artifacts are discovered by people who like to explore. It is relatively easy. Wherever populations of Native Americans lived in times long past, a stone tool or arrowhead may be discovered. Some are quite beautiful. It is possible to determine the design of a tool and imagine what it was used for.

These modern day explorers are usually interested in the story behind the artifact. It gives them a peek back into prehistory and the culture of those who lived before us. It is not easy to identify the objects. However, research has been done, which makes learning more about the artifacts somewhat easier.

It is possible to date an artifact by the material it is made of. The shape of a stone object is another clue. Finally, one can assume the tribe that used an artifact lived in the geographic area where the arrowhead or ax was discovered. However, this is not always the case since the tribes did travel and sometimes trade goods with another tribe.

An arrowhead can be stemmed or notched. The various tribes developed individualized methods of making tools. There are books filled with pictures of the arrowheads and other tools from each specific age. It is advisable to purchase one written by someone educated in the field.

The most common item to retrieve is the Indian arrowhead. The type of stone it is made of and the size will indicate the time period it was made it. Pottery is seldom found intact. Shards of a bowl or container for water can be identified. But, it will take an expert to ascertain the history of a shard.

Axes are another ancient item found with great regularity. It might be made of quartz, slate or flint stone. Axes were made and used from the earliest times to the more recent past. The earliest man who made axes lived in the Paleolithic times. Axes were made to serve as weapons.

The atlatl was used as a weapon to shoot darts or spears. It was also a hunting tool. It has a hook at one end of the shaft and a handle at the other. The hook was inserted into a hole at the end of a spear. A hunter would whip the atlatl forward. Compare the movement to an overhand serve by a tennis player. Every tribe utilized some version of the atlatl. This powerful weapon was eventually replaced by the bow and arrow.

Each of the Indian artifacts from the earliest times served a useful purpose. Some were unadorned but others were made more beautiful. Those were the ones that were prized and lent prestige to the owner. He was most likely one of the tribal leaders. Each American Indian artifact that is discovered and identified by an expert adds to the available knowledge about those people who lived in ancient times.

There are amazing American Indian artifacts that date back to the Ice Age. Many of them are animal figurines. Mammoths, wooley rhinoceros and Ice Age camels were carved. Rocks were found in sets that matched in color and size. There were stones shaped to nest on top of each other. They are suspected of being toys made for children to play with. These are fascinating finds from a river in Illinois.
