The Process Of Construction Site Preparation

By Lela Perkins

Any structural project begins by preparing the ground. This means that any building project is as successful as the Construction site preparation. The process of making an area ready for development starts when an approval has been issued by authorities and it is the first step towards developing properties that are not in violation of health, safety and environmental standards. So, what is the process of preparing a building ground for possible development?

One of the first steps in making the ground ready for possible development is to establish the exact area boundaries and erect a perimeter fence. The surest way of knowing where the boundaries are is by using an architect area plan or drawing. Once a perimeter fence is in place, it is important that a placard is set up that shows the persons overseeing construction, where and how they can be contacted if need be. Failure to provide such details will mean that in case of emergency situations such as break in and accidents during after-hours, the concerned parties will not be informed in good time, which delays actions.

The next thing to do is to identify where best to place safety signs onto and inside the fence. Some of the signs pinned onto the fence include Construction Work In Progress, No Unauthorized Entry into the area, No Hawking etc. Some of the safety signs you can place inside includes No Safety Gear, No Job, No Smoking, Fire Exit Points Here etc.,

Other than carrying out soil tests to assess soil contamination and indications of possible issues with concrete pouring and excavation work, you need to scrutinize the ground for unknown risks including unattended underground drainage channels, hidden cable systems and concealed excavation shafts. If such dangers exist, resolve them by removing them and filling up all the empty shafts.

Clearing the ground is the next stage. This is a complex step that requires a lot of planning because it is the most important step. Failure to effectively clear the ground will result in future problems such as faulty foundation, rodent infestation and limited space to build on. Some of the activities involved in this stage are clearing all vegetation, demolishing old buildings, salvaging any usable bricks from the demolished buildings, exterminating rodents and insects, uprooting trees and other plants. Clearing the ground precedes leveling up the ground.

Facilities such as office, toilets, changing rooms and eatery are then set up to make the place operational and livable for the workers. In addition, the ground needs to be linked with water and energy supply to be used before, during and after the development phase.

Communication plays a crucial role in facilitating a successful project. As a result, you need to install an effective communication system as a way of preparing the area for possible development. This includes linking the area with a telephone line and internet access, which will be useful in giving out instructions to relevant parties, facilitating contracts and communicating with various stakeholders including suppliers, specialist including architect, electricians and engineers etc.

Construction site preparation is not complete without facilitating operational efficiency and security of the ground. This can be achieved by allocating spaces for various tasks including loading and storage areas and installing safety locks and CCTV cameras respectively.
